NYU Summer Intensive June 7-June 28, 2010
This 3 week immersion program is offered as an alternative to the conventional classroom experience and will present students with the opportunity to explore cultural institutions of Prague and the Czech Republic, and to work directly with noted Czech artists in the studios of Artmill (www.artmill.eu). The session will end with an exhibition of student work in Prague.
The first part of the session (5 days) will take place in Prague, where students will participate in a series of lectures focused on Czech art, politics, society, and contemporary culture, to be interspersed with excursions to artist studios, national and artist-organized cultural institutions, Arts Academies and independent galleries (where several of the lectures will take place). NYU-Prague affiliated faculty as well as noted Czech historians and artists will present lectures on various subjects including art criticism and theory.
From Prague students will travel to Artmill, located 2-1/2 hours south of Prague in the forested countryside of Southern Bohemia. For 12 days students will work as apprentices to leading Czech arts professionals including painters, sculptors, photographers, installation and multi-media artists, designers, and architects. This intensive learning session is based on the guild models of the Renaissance. During these studio sessions students will also participate in guided excursions to national and local museums and castles, galleries, and local artists studios. Students will experience local culture and community interaction of this unique region while living near artmill, visiting sites and meeting local artists. Students will work in the studios for approximately 8-10 days in their chosen media.
Upon completion of the studio work session, students will return to Prague for 4 days. During this time we will continue with studio and academic visits as well as plan and install the exhibition. Students will prepare for a traditional Czech Vernissage (opening) of their work, with Czech music and food.
Steinhardt Art Faculty member Carolanne Patterson and Artmill Director Barbara Benish will participate in the masters program and will be with students each day to assist with the development of artistic concepts, design, and presentation of work for the exhibition.
By participating in this immersion course students will develop historical and critical perspectives about their chosen subject, while gaining awareness of the Central European contemporary artistic practice. For further information please contact:

Masters visited with students each day, critiquing and offering help on their projects for the final show. There was a lot of one-on-one time, many shared meals, and the final exhibition of all our work together in Prague.
