ArtMill is delighted to host Prof. Leal as one of our 2018 Artists in Residence. His stunning graphic works were recently exhibited in Buenos Aires, ​​Madrid, Budapest, and will be shown this summer in New York City. Enrique Leal is a visual artist and Assistant Professor of Print Media at the Art Department of the University of California in Santa Cruz. Originally from Recife Brazil, Leal has worked as a printmaker in the USA and Spain before receiving his BFA from the Polytechnique University of Valencia, MFA and PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Castilla La Mancha (UCLM), where he established the Print Media Area as a professor and researcher from 1998-2014. He is the recipient of printmaking fellowships from the Institute of Iberian-American Culture, the Spanish Academy in Rome, and a visiting artist / teacher at the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, Rutgers University. Leal's work has been exhibited and is found in collections in Argentina, Brazil, France, Hungary, Spain and the United States. 

His work promotes awareness of creative and contingent correspondences between material, process, and visual technologies; an aesthetic of emergence that evokes the world’s incessant and teeming display of change, where the residual remains of origin, growth and permutation call forth graphic material. The pursuit is not so much of invention, but of unfolding conceptual correspondences and material meanings, a possibility of becoming as a quality of the still-to-be.

Sus impresionantes trabajos gráficos se exhibieron recientemente en Buenos Aires, Madrid, Budapest, y se exhibirán este verano en la ciudad de Nueva York. Enrique Leal es artista visual y Profesor Ayudante en Medios de Impresión del Departamento de Arte de la Universidad de California Santa Cruz. Originalmente de Recife, Brasil, Leal ha trabajado como grabador en EEUU y España antes de recibir su Licenciatura en Bellas Artes de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, y el titulo de Doctor en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Castilla La Mancha (UCLM), donde estableció la área de Medios de Impresión como docente e investigador de 1998-2014. Ha recibido becas de grabado del Instituto de la Cultura Iberoamericana, la Academia Española en Roma, y residencia artística/docente en la Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper, Universidad de Rutgers. El trabajo de Leal se ha exhibido y se encuentra en colecciones en Argentina, Brasil, España, Francia, Hungría y, los Estados Unidos.

Su obra promueve el conocimiento de correspondencias creativas y contingentes entre materiales, procesos y tecnologías visuales; una estética de emergencia que evoca la exhibición incesante y fecunda del cambio en el mundo, donde los restos de origen, crecimiento y permutaciones desencadenan materia gráfica. La búsqueda no es tanto de la invención, sino del despliegue de correspondencias conceptuales y significados materiales, la posibilidad del devenir como una cualidad del aún-por-ser.
